Sometimes the friendships of our kids can inspire so much more, creativity, businesses, and even help us find our own best friends. LoveShackFancy + Romy and the Bunnies came from the friendship of two sweet little girls who brought their mamas, Rebecca Hessel Cohen and Julia Restoin Roitfled, together to create a collection of sweet and easy clothes made for barefoot days and traveling the world.
How did you two meet? How did the collaboration come about?
We met last summer in the Hamptons through our daughter’s swim instructor, and the girls immediately became close friends. We live quite near each other in NYC and have many of the same interests. We are both entrepreneurs with a strong interest and background in fashion, with little girls who are also quite interested in fashion themselves! The girls are actually a year apart but go to the same school, so we spend a lot of time together. It really felt like the natural decision for us to collaborate because LoveShackFancy and Romy and the Bunnies share a very similar aesthetic.
What is the collection inspired by?
As the mom of a little girl, I love to shop for her! We were always planning to launch our loveshack girls collection and it just never felt like the right moment. When Julia and I started talking about doing something together, it felt right, so we went for it. Julia has a great sense of style and an incredible eye, so it was an exciting opportunity to do something with her and Romy and the Bunnies. And we knew it would be fun working together!
We wanted the collection to be playful, comfortable enough for our daughters to run around and play, and to have a vintage feel. A bit like the dresses we used to wear ourselves as little girls.

Who do you imagine wearing the collection
Our little loveshack girl doesn’t follow trends. She has style and personality! She is playful and free, she’s curious, she loves the beach and French picnics in the garden. Our little girl is most likely well travelled and her mom packs her bag full of little dresses, skirts and peasant tops rolled up to easily wear from the beach to play dates!
What do Romy and Scarlett love to do together?
Romy and Scarlett love to have lunches at Sant Ambroeus ( like their mamas) and run around in our backyard and at the beach together. Swimming is always a favorite activity and they love to play with anything Ana and Elsa!
How do you think little girls should dress?
I just feel that a lot of the clothes are now, mini versions of adult clothes which I really don’t like, or maybe a bit over the top and impossible for kids to play in. We wanted to create pretty clothes, yet comfortable and most importantly, timeless. Kids clothing should not be trendy to my opinion.
Do the girls have a favorite color?
Scarlett’s favorite colors are pink, purple and white!
Tell us about your personal style and how it’s influenced the way you dress your daughters?
Scarlett’s wardrobe has the same sensibility as my own, but more girly and even more soft and feminine. I love muted colors for babies and toddlers. I love layering pieces, and my daughter is always in skirts and dresses and little tops. In the fall and winter we layer with cashmere sweaters and hoodies, but she almost always wears her wardrobe staples of cotton skirts and dresses. We wanted easy and effortless pieces that mothers could buy for their daughters without needing to think too much about it. Pieces that fit into the wardrobe in an elegant and sophisticated and feminine way. It’s the same philosophy we apply at LoveShackFancy. Effortless and wearable, timeless and feminine. Clothes you want to run barefoot in the fields in, take to the beach and also wear to a nice dinner. Versatile and easy. Sophisticated and elegant but beachy and bohemian at the same time.

Are you planning to do any other collaborations or collections for older girls?
Yes! We love the creative process of collaborating on new projects, although it’s a lot of work it’s very rewarding. We will be launching a collection for girls but there is no set date for this yet.
