Jeannette Ogden of SHUTTHEKALEUP has taught us a valuable lesson: learn to love yourself and everything will follow. Here she shares her journey from eating disorder to living a beautifully healthy — Literally! – and happy life. Read below to find out more about her path to healthy living & drooling over some clean eats that will make your tummy start to rumble!

 

Tell us what was going on with you before you started @shutthekaleup? You were battling an eating disorder?

Before SHUTTHEKALEUP I was an assistant store manager at Barneys New York in Costa Mesa. I was battling an ED at the time and it was hard since I was in an industry that was solely based on appearance.

How did you overcome your eating disorder?

After being laid off from work, it was like a weight was lifted and I was able to become who I am now. I had the time to take yoga sculpt teacher training and was able to plan my wedding with no stress. The ED literally fell off and I had found balance without even looking for it. I feel extremely blessed.

What advice would you give to women suffering with an ED? Is there any action that they can take to help them recover?

Stop thinking food is an enemy. Food is fuel. You’re beautifully made and have much more to you than looks. Stay positive and around people who truly love you and can help with any triggers you might have. Speak out loud to how you’re feeling without being shy and OWN IT.

When did you start cooking?

I started cooking about five years ago. I was 23 when I first got into food and being hands-on in the kitchen.

What is SHUTTHEKALEUP? Where did the name come from?

SHUTTHEKALEUP is who I am, it’s a lifestyle and it’s most importantly.. being real. It came from me wanting to start a feed that had everything from yoga, real food, real life and GLUTEN.. cause you can’t live life without enjoying the so called ‘bad foods’ in balance!

Your feed and the food you make looks so delicious? How would you describe your food style?

My food style is easy, quick and so bright. I literally whip up everything I make so quickly because my hunger always creeps in strong!

What kind of workouts do you do?

Everything under the sun. I love cross training and yoga mostly.

How has healthy cooking and wellness played a role in your life as a mama?

It’s been a huge impact as a mama. I’ve learned lots throughout my struggles and finding balance has helped me help my family lead a healthy lifestyle using food as medicine for our bodies.

What do you think was the tipping point to make food transition from a point of anxiety to something that you can celebrate on your feed?

Letting my fears go and just owning who I am. I’m no longer scared of what people may think of me so I live much happier knowing I’m content with myself and the family my husband and I are growing. Now we celebrate with good company and real food without thinking “how many calories is in that?” “oh no I can’t have that” so on and so forth.

Can you give us a favorite recipe we can try at home?

One of my favorite recipes is my cookie recipe that my husband and I love and I also make it quite often! try it;

    1. 8 tablespoons of @kerrygoldusa unsalted grass fed butter
    2. ½ cup @wholesomesweet organic cane sugar
    3. ¼ cup packed @wholesomesweet light brown sugar
    4. 1 teaspoon @simplyorganicfoods vanilla extract
    5. 1 egg
    6. 1½ cups @bobsredmill organic all purpose flour
    7. 1/2 teaspoon @bobsredmill baking soda
    8. 1/2 teaspoon pink sea salt
    9. 3/4 cup @enjoylifefoods dark chocolate morsels
    10. what next?
      1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter should be room temperature.
      2. Using a hand mixer, beat the butter with the sugars until creamy. Add vanilla extract and the egg; beat on low speed until just incorporated – 10-15 seconds or so (if you beat the egg for too long, the cookies will be stiff). Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until crumbles form. Use your hands to press the crumbles together into a dough. It should form one large ball that is easy to roll. Add the morsels and mix them in the dough with your hands.
      3. Roll the dough into 12 large balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake for 9-10 minutes until the cookies look puffy and just barely golden.
      4. Try your hardest to let them cool on the cookie sheet for a good 20 minutes or so.. Buuuuut if you’re like me, you’ll eat two or three before that even happens.

How has motherhood changed you? What’s the best and the hardest part?

Motherhood has changed me into a more selfless person. I thought I was selfless when I got married but then you have a kid and you’re like, okay.. ya no. Hahah! So I enjoy the things I get to do for my son. The best part is being able to exclusively nurse him. The hardest part is to have a busy schedule and have to nurse him. It’s definitely a full time job and it’s been so difficult to stop everything I’m doing to feed for 30min-1hr, but I wouldn’t change that for anything in this world since that bond is literally incomparable.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Breakfast, I love it and I can’t wait for it! Shortly after would be the gym.

Can you tell us 5 things we need to now to start eating healthy and get in shape?

  1. Do it for the right reasons; not just to look “skinny”.
  2. Be confident going in.
  3. Eat allll the foods you love in moderation and avoid deprivation.
  4. Go hard. you must fail to pick yourself back up and get stronger.
  5. Listen to your body. It has a loud voice you just gotta listen!
