Joanna Chu

Genentech Associate Director Regulatory Program Management Tech Millbrae, California
About Joanna
My name is Joanna Chu and I am 32 years old. I have been married to my husband for 6 years now and we have a beautiful daughter, Kaylee who will turn 2 in March 2019.

I graduated from University California, Berkeley with a major in Molecular Toxicology and I recently obtained my master's degree in Bioscience Regulatory from Johns Hopkins University while working fulltime!

I currently work at Genentech as an Associate Director in the Regulatory program management department. I have been at Genentech for over 7 years. I started as an intern and quickly worked my way through various titles and positions.

Other Businesses:
Coffee Shop:
A couple of years ago, my husband and I opened a coffee bar in downtown San Francisco called Chapter 2 Coffee. It has been an amazing experience building a business together and we both learned so much throughout the processes. One of our goals was for the business to be self-sustaining, which would allow both of us to focus on our careers and our baby girl. Since last year, we have hired a great team that runs the coffee shop on their own!

Wedding Planning:
It must have been obvious how much I enjoyed planning my wedding because soon after I received a lot of requests from friends and families to help plan theirs! Since then I have planned quite a few weddings, the most recent one being a month ago. I am currently in the early phases of establishing this business and looking forward to seeing this grow.

Future Business Goals:
I have a couple of business goals that I am starting to work on and would love to be in the presence of other supportive mothers to provide direction and guidance.
I am passionate about living a non-toxic life style. I am currently looking into that business space that will allow me to influence others to be aware of potentially harmful chemicals we expose ourselves on a daily basis. With my background in toxicology and years of research, I have helped friends and family detoxify their cleaning supplies, skin care and make up etc.

What special skill, talent or gift would you like to give back to the community?

I truly enjoy planning events and I feel that I have a creative eye for bringing ideas to life. I feel that with my experience of planning weddings, baby showers and birthdays, I could give back to the community in this way.
Additionally, I truly learned a lot when starting my own coffee shop. If there are any mothers who would like to add a coffee shop/bar to their existing businesses or open a coffee shop, I have a plethora of resources that I could offer.
As mentioned before, I am passionate about living a non-toxic life. If anyone is interested in this, I can help detoxify their household and products that they use that could be potentially be harmful to health. After my daughter was born, she had severe eczema and thankfully I understood how chemicals could trigger this and after changing laundry detergents, cleaning supplies and even what material of clothes she wore, her eczema has gotten significantly better. This is one example of how I can help other families.

What is your biggest business challenge right now?

Balancing Work & Motherhood

Why do you want to be a part of heymama?

I have a few intentions of wanting to join the HeyMama community. I am eager to be surrounding by mothers who share similar interests as myself and is passionate about entrepreneurship. I am excited about the community aspect of HeyMama as it would be fulfilling to establish meaningful relationship with other moms who are going through the same highs and lows as myself. I am inspired by the passionate and driven women in this group and I hope to be able to contribute to the success of others as well and uphold the values of HeyMama.
Lastly, I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child and I am looking for that right group to help support myself as a first time mother and establish a strong and healthy community for my daughter.

xx Joanna Chu
