Markie Price

Yumi PR, Partnerships & Events Director Wellness Los Angeles, CA
About Markie
I’ve worked in PR for almost 15 years and got my start at Carolina Herrera in New York City. After that I took on increasingly senior roles at PR firms handling luxury lifestyle clients, and made the move to LA in 2008. I’m now working in house at Yumi, a nutrition and wellness company that makes fresh, organic baby food. I met Evelyn Rusli, one of the co-founders, when she was covering tech at the WSJ and NYT. When she told me she was leaving her career in journalism to start Yumi, I was instantly intrigued and wanted to do anything I could to help. Yumi addresses such a huge gap into the baby food market and it’s a pain point I could personally identify with. As a working mom with 2 kids myself, I struggled to make healthy meals when my kids were babies (...admittedly, I’m not a natural in the kitchen), but I also felt guilty whenever I was in a pinch for time and had to grab a pouch of processed baby food from the store. The mission behind Yumi is one that really called to me, and I’m now working with them as on communications, events and brand partnerships. I love going to work each day knowing that we’re making it easier for parents to feed their babes really great food.

What special skill, talent or gift would you like to give back to the community?

I’ve worked in PR for over 15 years and have a large rolodex of contacts and relationships across media and lifestyle brands that may come in handy to help the women in this community!

What is your biggest business challenge right now?

Getting the word out about Yumi and also educating new parents on the importance of nutrition during the First 1000 Days (from in utero to 2yrs old). We’re on a mission to change the status quo when it comes to how parents think about nutrition and approach feeding their babies. Since most of our operations are still focused on the west coast, our biggest challenge is finding smart ways to scale our business so we can get our product to as many families as possible.

What do you want to achieve in 2018, personally and professionally?

Personally - to become conversational in french. Both of my kids attend a french school and I know nothing! This cannot be a good thing for me when they are teenagers and have their own secret language...
Professionally, to align with likeminded businesses and individuals who can help us continue to raise awareness around the importance of early childhood nutrition, and elevate our brand on a national level

Why do you want to be a part of heymama?

It’s such an eclectic collection of smart, creative entrepreneurial mamas; it would be so fun to be among some of my colleagues, friends and familiar faces, and also make new friends and collaborate with more dynamic women in this amazing group.
