Victoria Road LLC Co-Founder / CFO Fashion New York, NY
About Megan
I live with my husband and two fiercely independent little girls, ages 7 and 5, in downtown Manhattan. I practiced law as a corporate attorney at a large firm for six years, until my first daughter turned 14 months and I realized firm life wouldn't let me spend as much time with her as I wanted. It was the best decision I could have made. Two years and another child later, I joined up with a former law colleague and mom, Shannon Grewer, to start up a new fashion brand for women and children with a beautiful mission, called Victoria Road. Since early 2016, we've been producing all of our collections at a dedicated production facility in Lahore, Pakistan, where we collaborate with talented emerging women designers and skilled craftsmen to create luxury apparel with a global story. Our goal is to put the focus back on the local talent over fast fashion, all while bridging cultures through design. We are verified members of the Fair Trade Federation. As a co-founder of a start-up, I wear many hats! Financial, marketing, web development, graphic design as well as my legal skills are all in use every day. I've learned so much and I'm still hiking up the curve, but it's so much fun!

Best advice you've ever been given

Do your research.

What special skill, talent or gift would you like to give back to the community?

I feel like I'm a jill of all trades but a master of none, but I'm always happy to talk to women looking to jump into their own new entrepreneurial pursuits and offer my own experiences of what has worked and what hasn't worked for me.

Personal Passions, Charities, Hobbies:

My personal passion (other than my two girls!) is learning about world cultures and finding ways to connect across cultures. As an interfaith family (my husband is Jewish and I am Catholic), we teach our children that different people, cultures and religions make the world interesting and beautiful, and that we should respect all cultures and ways of life. I think the best way to promote intercultural unity is through dialogue and, in particular, sharing stories in a way that allows members of different groups to identify with each other on a personal level. This flows through to our brand mission at Victoria Road, where we seek to use common interests like fashion and design as a stepping stone to breaking through cultural boundaries and stereotypes. Here's something I wrote about that over the summer: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bridging-cultures-one-person-at-a-time_us_57abeeede4b08c46f0e4b467 Favorite charities / organizations these days are Planned Parenthood, Anti-Defamation League, Southern Poverty Law Center and Counsel on American-Islamic Relatio

What is your biggest business challenge right now?

Marketing and scaling up! We are picking up larger accounts now like Barneys and Maisonette in 2018, and we're building up both our technological and our human infrastructure at our studio to fill larger volumes without sacrificing quality or our ethical standards. It's exciting! We're also building up our sales and marketing team that will help us share the amazing story of our brand in a way that resonates with our audience.

Name one thing that scares the shit out of you:

Losing any member of my family.

What is one thing that would be game-changing for your business right now?

I've been spending the start-up years at Victoria Road making sure we are doing everything the right way in terms of design, quality and ethics. Our product speaks for itself, and what would be game changing now would be to be able to spread the message quickly to a national and international audience.

If you could tell your 20 year old self one thing, what would it be?

Don't give up on your dreams, and don't lose sight of your values.

Why do you want to be a part of heymama?

I love the support system of this amazing group of women. It's rare to see such a thriving network of fierce, savvy women that are always ready to lift each other up through their networks, advice, care and concern. It's a growing power family and I'm so humbled to be a part of it.
