Mimi Neandross

Determined to Succed Co-Executive Director Non Profit Los Angeles, CA
About Mimi
I am the mother of two incredible boys, ages 11 and 8. I am also married to my best friend and boyfriend - we just celebrated 15 years of marriage, but have been together for 23 years!

I discovered at a young age that what fulfilled me as a person was working with teenagers. The transitional period between childhood and adulthood is complicated. A caring, steady adult can make a tremendous difference - not in mitigating or fixing the issues teens face, because overcoming challenges and struggles is how one becomes an adult -but rather in being present and available to listen.

I began working with Determined to Succeed in 2011 and have worn many hats in the organization since. Before becoming Co-Executive Director, I served as an academic advisor, writing instructor, class Advisor, college counselor, and most recently as Education Director. I have always been passionate about education and have spent the past two decades working in the field. While in college at Colgate University, I worked with teens with learning disabilities and I developed a tutoring/mentoring program for teens at a local group home. Upon graduation, I earned my teaching credential and began teaching English at Belmont High School in Los Angeles. There, I created a Peer Counseling program to encourage high school graduation and to promote college awareness. I also mentored new teachers, ran a successful book club, and worked in the school’s college office. I eventually left the classroom to work as a college counselor privately and at the One Voice Scholars program.

I'm not sure there are any words that I live by, but when in tough spots in life, I remind myself of the serenity prayer.

What special skill, talent or gift would you like to give back to the community?

With 20 plus years working in education and the college access and success space, I am well versed in all things related to college admission. I know there are many parents with questions about what their children need to do to be admissible - and this information I am always happy to share.

Outside of my knowledge about the college admission process - I have an abundance of knowledge about raising urban chickens, making food from scratch, and composting. Always happy to discuss. :)
