Beloved by fashion and lifestyle editors and bloggers alike, Ramy Brook Sharp created her signature day-to-night fashion line as a response to the gaping hole she saw in the marketplace. Struggling to find the perfect clothes that would be suitable for date night, Ramy started her namesake line 7 years ago and has quickly become a go-to designer for effortlessly chic style. As a mama to three, Ramy knows that hard work and a little grit go a long way and is sharing how she separates her home and work life with her husband and business partner, setting her company motto and her tips for going from day to night in a pinch. Read on…

What was your background in prior to starting your company and how did it influence you?

My sisters, mother and I have always adored clothes and fashion. My mom loved to make our clothes and dress us up when were little and many of my fondest memories as a child were of us going to the mall as a family. I guess the gene stuck because as an adult, my girlfriends would always ask me for style advice. I had put my advertising career on hold while my three children were very young and around the time that they were all in school full-time, I started to notice a void in the marketplace. I was unable to find the perfect date-night top. Frustrated by my lack of choices, I started Ramy Brook in 2010 with six sexy tops and one sexy dress. Seven years later, my company is in most of the major department stores and in over 200 boutiques around the country. We also have our flagship store in NYC’s Soho neighborhood as well as our website, ramybrook.com.

Your line is inspired by strong women. Who has been most influential in your career? Have you had a mentor? What was that like?

My mother is my mentor. She is a woman who worked full-time but still managed to be the most present mom. She and my father believed in the power of hard work and instilled this drive in my sisters and me. I am now imparting the same message to my children. As for designers who inspire me, Diane Von Furstenberg and Donna Karen are both examples of women in fashion who carved out their own path and made tremendous names for themselves. They set a precedent for women like me to be passionate business owners.

The best employees are the happiest ones. We pride ourselves on the positive culture at Ramy Brook and recognize that if our employees are excited to come to work and are passionate and invested, it benefits the company many times over.

What is the hardest thing about being your own boss? What moments do you love and which ones do you find totally frustrating?

Being your own boss has many advantages, especially as a full-time working mother. The biggest perk is that I have the flexibility to manage my own schedule, which allows me to make most of the kids’ games, concerts and shows. On the flip side, because it is my business and my name is on the door, everything is ultimately my responsibility. To have taken Ramy Brook from my bedroom to a flourishing company is one of my greatest joys and I appreciate every day and every success.

What is your greatest strength as a leader and entrepreneur?

My greatest strength is that I care about our team’s well-being. I am sensitive to my employees’ time and respect that they have a life outside of the office. The best employees are the happiest ones. We pride ourselves on the positive culture at Ramy Brook and recognize that if our employees are excited to come to work and are passionate and invested, it benefits the company many times over.

Do you have a company mantra or set of ideals that mean something to you? If so what are they?

HAPPY. We have large pink letters on one of the walls in the office that spell out HAPPY. Happiness, in my opinion, is the key to success. Ramy Brook’s motto is “happy, sexy, strong” and we want all Ramy Brook consumers to feel empowered and beautiful while wearing our garments.

Thinking back to when you first started your line, what was the thing that prepared you the most for your career? What were you totally not prepared for?

I started my line in 2010 when my kids were between five and ten. Raising three kids already required quite a bit of juggling, so I was already super organized and an efficient multi-tasker. What I was not prepared for was all the different personalities that I would encounter. You can choose your friends in your personal life but you can’t always choose who you interact with in business – but I’ve been very fortunate in this regard.

Break through walls and go with your gut. There will always be naysayers who will say that you will fail, but if you remain confident and true to your vision, you can succeed.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever been given? Any advice of your own to share that you’ve learned along the way?

Break through walls and go with your gut. There will always be naysayers who will say that you will fail, but if you remain confident and true to your vision, you can succeed.

How did becoming a mother influence your career? What was the biggest change? Did you feel more motivated or like you needed to take a break?

I launched Ramy Brook, when my youngest Stevie, was five years old. I hope that I am demonstrating to my kids that women can work, be successful professionally and still be involved mothers who are raising great kids. The biggest change was that I was not physically around as much, which is still hard. I am not at the stage yet where I need a break, check back with me in a few years.

What’s your best selling piece and why do you think it’s so popular?

The Paris Sleeveless Dress is a classic style that we bring back season after season. It is one of our top sellers and I believe that it is successful because it is so versatile. You can wear it as a dress or as a tunic over jeans. It comes in such fun colors, packs well and can be worn all year long.

Your clothes are beloved by fashion bloggers and Instagram influencers. Who do you look to for inspiration on Instagram?

There are so many great bloggers and Instagram influencers out there. These women have such cool style and it is really fun to see how they all wear their Ramy Brook in unique ways. We feel very fortunate that we have had such a resounding response from the influencer community and our presence is continuing to grow and expand. Some of my favorite women who have worn us are Rocky Barnes, Chriselle Lim and Song of Style. I also think that SomethingNavy has a fantastic aesthetic, we have to get her in some Ramy Brook!

What’s your philosophy like when it comes career and family? How do you help your kids to realize their dreams and aspirations?

Actions speak louder than words. I hope they see that working hard leads to success. Rob and I encourage them to be passionate and confident, while staying grounded and realistic. Always diligently prepare. Don’t be afraid to take chances. They understand that they are all on their own journey and will continually learn and grow.
