You’ve lived in Hawaii where it’s summer all year long (jealous!) and you are now living in Utah. What are your top things to do outdoor with kids in Hawaii? In Utah?

Hawaii is amazing and will always be home! My husband grew up in Hawaii and I have been there for eight years. Hawaii embodies my son Sylver; from playing outside to climbing trees to surfing the clean blue ocean waves. My husband owns a couple of restaurants in Hawaii with his brothers called Seven Brothers and they are in the process of opening another location in Utah, so we relocated. We will be here for the next year or so, and then off to the next adventure, but we will always find ourselves going back to Hawaii in between all our travels to spend time with family and get back to our roots. We have been in Utah for three weeks, and have already been back to Hawaii once, but so far we are loving Utah! There is so much to offer here that you don’t get on an island. We have been going on some of the most beautiful hikes, seen some incredible waterfalls, and have seen some breathtaking sunsets. There really is something so special about seeing a snow-capped mountain with a blazing sunset behind it, turning the entire mountainside hues of pink, gold and yellow.

Tell us about the location you chose to shoot at. Where is it and what do you love about it?

We shot at a gorgeous waterfall just south of Provo in the mountains where we like to hike. The drive up is so green you almost feel like you are in Hawaii. The hike is super mellow and kid-friendly, and once you get to the the bottom of the hike, you can hear the running river coming down the mountain. The waterfall itself is ice cold, but so incredible after the journey to get there. They say waterfalls are magical and have healing properties when you go under them, and after experiencing these falls, I would definitely say this is true. We also spend a lot of time at the lake here. The weather is in the high nineties, and the lake water is still freezing cold due to the snow run-off in the mountains. The weather, water, and hikes are different than Hawaii, but the one thing they both have in common is that they are absolutely stunning!

You recently had another baby (congrats!). What has been your biggest surprise going to a family of four?

YES! We are a family of four and we are in love! Bali is such a special edition to our family. Sylver is in pure bliss with his little sister and can hardly get enough of her. Bali has had my husband wrapped around her chubby little finger since day one and I can’t stop kissing her and giving her cuddles every second of the day. We all love her and are adjusting as if she’s always been with us. My biggest surprise has been how easy she is and how well Sylver transitioned to having a sibling. It’s just been so great.

As for products, we have been loving the new Mousse sunscreen and the Mist sunscreen, both from Supergoop! I love how lightweight it is, and the smell is awesome. It’s not strong, but it has a great scent to it.

Do you have any favorite sun accessories for your kids?

I am obsessed with hats and always wear one anytime I see the sun in the sky! I always put a hat on Bali if we are going in the water or just walking around in the sun. I try to keep one on Sylver but he isn’t too stoked about wearing one, so I just make sure to load him up with sunscreen!

Speaking of sunscreen, sun exposure must be a big concern for you and your family given how much time you’ve spent on the islands. How do you stay safe in the sun? What are some of your favorite products?

I love bringing an umbrella to the beach but they can be a bit bulky and annoying, so I try to always find the shadiest spot on the beach or at the lake and have that as our resting zone. There is nothing better than a nice shady area to hang out in and refuel with some water and hydrating snacks. As for products, we have been loving the new Mousse sunscreen and the Mist sunscreen, both from Supergoop!. I love how lightweight it is, and the smell is awesome. It’s not strong, but it has a great scent to it.

When heading out for the day at the beach with the family, what’s in your bag?

  • wallet
  • glasses
  • Hydro Flask filled with ice and water
  • snacks
  • diapers/wipes
  • hats
  • sunscreen
  • chapstick
  • gum

Do you have any tips for mamas looking to keep their little ones entertained when traveling?

Gosh, I feel like I could write a book on this but the main ones that come to mind are:

  • Dress in comfortable clothes and put your kids in jammies
  • Bring little toys to keep them entertained (no more than 5)
  • Bring a pillow
  • If you have a little one, bring a nursing pillow
  • Bring plenty of your own snacks

You mentioned you love the new Supergoop! Mousse as it’s so easy to apply (us too!). Do you have any tips for applying sunscreen and how do you make applying sunscreen fun?

Bali is just so precious and would let me apply sunscreen to her all day. Sylver, on the other hand, isn’t a fan! One thing that works however is when I get sunscreen on his belly and I tell him I’ll draw an animal out of it. He thinks that is pretty cool and sometimes this trick turns into a fifteen minute art class!

You are an incredible photographer! What 3 tips do you have for capturing the perfect summer family moment?

Thank you! That is very sweet! My three tips are:

  1. Don’t let them know you are taking the photo
  2. Capture them in the moment instead of posing them
  3. Get as much laughter as possible

What does your perfect Saturday look like?

I love to start my morning with a cup of tea followed by a good workout. I then hang out with my kids and husband and we usually head outdoors. Our favorite thing to do is to go to the beach or walk along the river. At the end of the day, we have a nice dinner and watch a movie together and then I’ll have another cup of hot tea.

What do you do to recharge and take time for yourself?

My husband gives me a nice long massage and I paint my nails!
