We are thrilled to be partnering with Dr. Roshini Raj at our upcoming Strong Like a Mama event at The Surf Lodge in Montauk in partnership with Canyon Ranch in Lenox! Given that Dr. Raj’s career is based on the belief that what you put ON your body is as important as what you put IN your body, we couldn’t think of a better partner. We sat down with the esteemed doc to talk more about her background as an internist and board certified, practicing gastroenterologist at New York University, and how her focus led her to start TULAEach product in the beauty line combines probiotics with clinically-proven, high-quality ingredients and have been known to yield dramatic results. Want to hear more about the beauty trend that will be the next “it” ingredient? Read on…

When I came across some fascinating research on probiotics having incredible skin health benefits when applied topically, a lightbulb went off.

How did you make the transition from internal medicine to the beauty industry? Is it something you always wanted to do?

Being a gastroenterologist, I’ve noticed the strong connection between what’s happening internally and how people look on the outside. I have researched probiotics my entire career and have seen the life changing impact they have had on my patients. When I came across some fascinating research on probiotics having incredible skin health benefits when applied topically, a lightbulb went off. I am a woman in my 40’s, so taking care of my skin is very much top of mind.

Probiotics are healthy, or “good for you” bacteria, which have incredibly soothing and balancing properties both internally and topically. I knew that women who are dealing with redness, irritation, acne, extreme dryness and many other skin conditions would benefit so much from this miracle ingredient.

I decided to name the brand TULA, which means “balance” in Sanskrit, and now almost 3 years later we’re growing and helping women (and men) have healthier, happier, and more radiant skin.

My best days are when clients get in touch with me or my team and talk about how TULA has changed their lives because they never thought they could have beautiful, healthy skin.

What are the benefits of putting supplements like probiotics on your skin vs eating them?

Probiotics have a balancing quality both inside and out. I would say that for optimal health, one should take probiotics as a supplement (or get it via foods) and apply it to the skin. A lot of skin concerns are primarily caused by inflammation. Acne, redness, irritation, even wrinkles are all due to inflammation. Did you know that collagen breakdown, which leads to wrinkles, is also caused by inflammation?

Probiotics help soothe the skin and also have been clinically proven to increase the skin’s barrier function. That means your skin is stronger, healthier, more resilient and holds on to moisture better and longer. This is the foundation for healthy, youthful skin.

Some argue that eating a balanced diet is all you need. How much does adding supplements to our diet really benefit for our skin?

Eating a balanced diet is a great way to get your skin healthy, but I have to say that it’s very difficult to truly eat a balanced diet. Busy moms often sacrifice their meals to make time for kids and/or work. While eating a complete and balanced diet is difficult or even unrealistic, supplements are a great way to get nutrients and probiotics so you can ensure you’re getting your daily dose of what you need to feel and look great.

I am so passionate about probiotics (both for inside and out) that for the past two years I have been formulating a body and beauty nutrition supplement. This supplement will offer both internal and external benefits and would be a daily dose of probiotics, which help with digestive health and balance, as well as Vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant which offers immense skin benefits and ceramides which aid with skin hydration. This has been a true labor of love for me. I wanted to bring something to women that will help them look and feel beautiful, in a single pill.

TULA Beauty

We’re obsessed with your Exfoliating Treatment Mask. What is your favorite product in your line and what can we be on the lookout for next?

My absolute favorite product is the Multi Spectrum Overnight Treatment. I use it every night and credit my glow in the morning to this product. I always pack it with me when I travel because I truly can’t live without it. It’s packed with probiotics and other skin superfoods, so consider it a balanced meal for your skin.

We are currently working on some exciting products utilizing a new source of probiotics from kefir. Kefir is a fermented milk which originated in the Caucasus mountain region in Russia and is extremely rich in probiotics, vitamins and minerals. The strains of probiotics in kefir are incredibly healing and calming. The first two products in this collection are launching in August and the third, which we’re working on now, will be coming out in January. All I can promise is that it will be a true savior for dry, chapped skin – a “recovery” if you will.

If there was one thing you wish women would stop doing, what would it be? Is there a mistake you constantly see when it comes to skin care?

I wish women would stop doubting themselves especially in the workplace. Women often have something called the “imposter syndrome” where they are unable to internalize their successes and feel like frauds. Confidence is so important and deserved!

The biggest skincare mistake is women often are searching for a quick fix. This doesn’t exist. It takes good skincare and a routine to achieve healthy skin. Stick with it ladies, it will pay off!

Is there a food that is ruining our skin and aging us that we should avoid?

Sugar is a bad one in my book. I would stay away from refined sugar because it’s a known pro-inflammatory food. Sugar leads to collagen breakdown and causes your skin to lose elasticity, which in turn leads to wrinkles and sagging.

Should everyone take a probiotic?

Yes, most people will greatly benefit from taking a probiotic. They are so wonderful for digestive health and there is more and more research coming out talking about how probiotics can also help with skin, immunity and even mental health. I don’t think we’ve reached the tip of the iceberg in terms of how beneficial probiotics are. With that said, you should always consult with your doctor before starting a new supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or have a medical condition.

What do you predict to be the next big health trend? Beauty trend?

Probiotics! It’s a “natural” ingredient which is so powerful and benefits so many aspects of our health. Probiotics can increase metabolism, decrease bloating, sooth irritated skin, and boost immunity. Now we’re seeing that probiotics are helping other ingredients you put on your skin work better and harder – due to their impact on your skin barrier function.

I don’t think probiotics are a trend, I know they are here to stay and will become a part of our daily routines. Remember to get your daily dose!

TULA Beauty

Do you have any daily rituals?

My main mantra is as long as my kids are happy and healthy, nothing else is as important.

I like to have a glass of warm water with lemon every morning, meditate before heading to work, and work out as often as I can. This gives me energy and helps me refocus.

What does “beauty from the inside out” mean to you?

I think of it in two ways. A beautiful person is one who is caring, compassionate and kind. That comes from within and manifests itself in a warm, radiant energy.

Beauty can also be created from “within” by eating healthy, sleeping enough and making sure you treat your body well. There is no substitute for taking good care of yourself.

TULA Beauty

How would you describe your company culture? Do you have a mantra or set of ideals that you enforce?

TULA is a group of ambitious, creative and supportive people that have come together to create products that truly make a difference in people’s lives. Our company’s culture is rooted in our passion for our products and customers. We stress that members of our team need to be proactive and self-starters, but also empathetic and team players. It’s all about balance — which is what TULA literally means.
At the end of the day, company culture is defined by the ideals and values of the team, not a “mantra” that we have to enforce. When you’re a small company you have to feel that the people around the table are all there right beside you, rooting for you and helping you along the way. I’m so lucky to have a group of people who believe in my vision for TULA and live and breath it the way I do.

What has been the most challenging part about running your business? The most rewarding?

When you’re growing very quickly, it’s always hard to prioritize your time and your team’s time. You can’t do everything, so you need to be laser-focused on what matters most and where you focus resources and energy. For TULA, we truly believe in building a community and communication directly with our customers, which is why you won’t find us in tons of retailers or on every shelf.
Building a team from scratch and learning from each other every day is endlessly rewarding. Our team is so passionate and supportive of each other, through good times and bad. I also can’t overemphasize how rewarding it has been to reach women with our products and know that we are making a difference in their overall health and confidence. We receive emails, written letters, even cold calls from customers sharing their skin struggles and stories of how TULA has helped. Some of them bring me to tears. They make all the hard work worth it!

TULA is based around the idea of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. What does this balance look like for you? Does it exist as a business owner and mother? Has your balance shifted since becoming a mother?

The idea of balance definitely shifts as you become a mother. Being a mom of two boys, life is not about me anymore. I think about what’s best for them and the family all the time. While priorities change when you become a mom, I feel it’s even more important than ever to make time for yourself. I remember being a new mom and doctor and feeling completely overwhelmed. It wasn’t easy, but I had to learn how to take time for myself and make sure I sleep enough, eat well, make it to the gym or at least work out at home a few times a week. Only when I established these healthy habits did I feel a sense of balance and as though I was doing a great job at both my practice and at home with the family, and find comfort within myself.

3 pearls of wisdom

Don’t try to be a perfect mom. Be caring and loving and don’t sweat the small stuff. The most important thing is to provide a loving, safe environment for your children.

Ask for help. The happiest moms are those who ask for and get support.

Be a good example. Be a mirror for your kids. If you want them to be present, get off your phone. Model the behavior you wish to see in them.
